GENERAL TERMS

Pelvic Floor - The valuntary muscles and connective tissue that supports the pelvic organs

Bladder - The organ which stores urine

Ureters - Tubes that carry urine from the kidney into the bladder

Urethra - A tube that drains urine from the bladder

Voiding - Emptying urine from the bladder

COMMON PELVIC FLOOR DISORDERS

Urinary Incontinence - Uncontrollable urine leakage or loss

Stress Incontinence - Uncontrollable urine leakage or loss that occurs when pressure is placed on the bladder through activities such as laughing, lifting, coughing, or sneezing

Urge Incontinence - Uncontrollable urine leakage associated with string sense of urgency to void

Dysuria - Painful urination

Urgency - The need to urinate immediately

Frequency - The need to urinate more frequently than normal. Normal daytime urine frequency is 7 urinations per day 

Nocturia - The need to urinate frequently during the night. Normal nightime urinary frequency is 1 urination per night 

Cystocele - A protrusion of the urinary bladder through the wall of the vagina

Rectocele - A protrusion of the rectum and the posterior wall of the vagina into the vagina

Enterocele - A protrusion of the small intestine between the rectum and the vagina

Uterine Prolapse - The falling, sinking or sliding of the uterus from its normal location down the length of the vagina

Fecal Incontinence - Uncontrollable stool or gas leakage or loss

Constipation - Difficulty in passing stools or an incomplete or infrequent passage of hard stools

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

Cystoscopy - Viewing the inside of the bladder with a lighted scope

Urodynamics - Using a catheter to study how the bladder functions during filling, leaking and urinating

Dynamic Cystoproctogram - Measuring the extent of prolapse, using x-rays

Electrodiagnostic Testing (EMG) - Evaluating nerve and muscle function, using electrical stimulation

Intravenous Pyelogram (IVP) - Using x-rays to examine structures and evaluate function of the urinary system

Urinalysis - Evaluating chemicals and cells in the urine

Urine Culture - Testing to determine if a urinary tract infection is present
