SPECIALIZED TESTING

When you first visit our respective offices, Dr. Heit or Dr. Graham will discuss your concerns with you and perform a physical exam, usually including a pelvic exam. Specialized testing may then be recommended. The following tests are available at the Continence Center located at Norton Suburban Women's Pavilion.

Cystoscopy

We use a small, lighted scope with special lenses and mirrors that allow us to examine the inside of your urethra and bladder for inflammation, stones or tumors.

Ultrasound

Sound waves are used to study the anal sphincter, bladder, urethra, kidneys, ureters or other pelvic organs to detect tumors and other pelvic masses, including abscesses.

Urodynamic Testing

A small catheter is inserted into the bladder to evaluate function of the urethra and bladder, including storing and emptying urine.

Dynamic Fluoroscopy of the Pelvic Floor

This relatively quick and painless test uses x-rays and specialized injectable dye to project an image of the organs on a fluorescent screen to measure the extent of prolapse during defecation.

Intravenous Pyelography

X-rays and specialized injectable dyes are used to track the progress of the dye as it moves from the kidneys through the ureters to the bladder and out of the body.

Electrodiagnostic Testing of the Pelvic Floor

Small adhesive patches are applied to various muscles of the pelvic floor to measure the response of these muscles to a series of small electrical impulses.

Anal Manometry

A small catheter is inserted into the rectum to determine how well the anal sphincter works.
